Mitral Regurgitation is basically a leaky mitral valve. It’s also known as mitral valve regurgitation, mitral insufficiency or just MR for short. Look at the image of the mitral valve below. The mitral valve separates the top and bottom of the left side of the heart (the main pumping chamber).

It possesses two cusps. The aortic valve possesses three cusps and lies between the left ventricle and the aorta. This is the difference between mitral valve and aortic valve. Aortic regurgitation (AR) is incompetency of the aortic valve causing backflow from the aorta into the left ventricle during diastole. Causes include valvular degeneration and aortic root dilation (with or without a bicuspid valve), rheumatic fever, endocarditis, myxomatous degeneration, aortic root dissection, and connective tissue (eg, Marfan syndrome) or rheumatologic disorders. Mitral and tricuspid are increasingly prevalent.

VERY MILD valve leak: Trace means 'very mild' and mitral valve regurgitation means 'leak'. It happens when your mitral valve doesn't close tightly, which allows blood to flow backward in your heart. When the 'leak' is moderate-severe you may develop symptoms of tiredness & fatigue.
